Designing Lovely Layouts in Lightroom

Video Tutorial and Print Template Sampler Pack

Oh hello. So glad you stopped by.

Today…let’s dip into Lightroom Classic’s Print module.

For many photographers, the Print Module is a feature they rarely, if ever, open. But as today’s video shows, it’s a super versatile layout and design tool…perfect for creating stunning digital assets for social media, your blog, emails and more.

The Print Module offers an intuitive, select, drag-and-drop workflow to design beautiful, multi-image layouts in minutes.

Key Takeaways from the Video

  1. Start with a Collection: The most important first step is to gather the photos you want to work with into a Lightroom Collection. The Print Module works seamlessly within a single collection, but you cannot easily switch between different folders. Organizing your images first will save you a lot of time.

  2. Templates are Your Shortcut to Great Design: While Lightroom's default templates can be a bit basic, you can create and save your own custom layouts for any purpose. Enter your email below to grab the sampler set.

    • Instagram Reel/Story Covers (9x16 ratio): Create a series of cohesive vertical layouts perfect for your social media presence.

    • Standard Photo Ratios (3x4 and 4x3): Quickly frame single images with clean, white borders.

    • Diptychs (8x6 ratio): Easily combine two images to tell a more compelling story.

  3. Discover Unexpected Creative Crops: One of my favourite (but often overlooked) features of the print module is seeing your photo in a whole new way. A landscape photo placed in a portrait-oriented cell can be moved around, revealing unique and powerful compositions you might never have discovered otherwise.

  4. Effortless Multi-Page Creation: Need to create several layouts at once? Simply select all the photos you want to use. Lightroom will automatically populate the first page and create subsequent pages for the remaining images.

  5. Exporting JPEGs with ‘Print to File’: This is the key to using your designs digitally. Instead of sending your layout to a physical printer, click the ‘Print to File’ button. This will allow you to save your single or multi-page layout as high-quality JPEG files, ready to be shared online.

  6. Save your work. Use ‘Create Saved Print’: If you create a layout you love and might want to revisit, don't just leave it on screen. Switching to another template will reset your work. Select ‘create saved print’. This saves your layout as a new print collection, preserving your image choices and placements.
