How to Make Simple Stencil Word Postcards with the Cricut
A simple fix for stencil letters that fall apart
edited with the signature system
I thought cutting out words with my Cricut would be simple. Then letters like A and R kept falling apart.
That’s when I learned about ‘bridging letters’.
One of the biggest problems when turning regular text into a Cricut stencil is that some letters have inner pieces that are not connected to the rest of the letter. Think of the middle of an A or the space inside an R. When the Cricut cuts those shapes, those center pieces can fall out, and the letter loses its shape.
That’s where bridging comes in. Bridging adds small connectors that keep those inner pieces attached so the stencil still works. In typography, those enclosed spaces are called counters, but in practical terms, they’re the little parts that disappear unless you connect them back in.
Today’s tutorial is a step-by-step look at how I made these word cards. They’re perfect for styling photos, tucking into trays, styling a mood board.
The Creative Bonus
Then I had one more idea.
What if I used my favourite photography flashlight to cast the words as shadows?
I tried it, and it worked beautifully.

Step-by-Step Tutorial
Once my brain caught up to how to bridge the letters, everything clicked into place.
What first felt a little confusing turned into a simple fix, and from there the fun part began. These word cards are such an easy way to add a graphic element to photos, styling trays, or little creative setups around the studio.
And the shadow play was an unexpected bonus.
And maybe this is also a good place to say the obvious.
I know not everyone has a Cricut, or even wants one. And for many people, Cricut projects can bring to mind a more ‘cutesy’ crafting style.
But maybe you’re like me and feel more drawn to things that are simple, minimalist, and clean.
That’s part of why I wanted to share this. I’m interested in what Cricut and paper projects look like through the lens of White Space... more minimal, more aesthetic, and a little less ‘cricut-y’.
It is totally possible. We just don’t see as many tutorials for that approach.
