ZINE guide
ZINE brings your photos and words together in a small book you can print, share or turn into a flip video.
Before you start
ZINE opens with a choice of paper size and format. Choose a starter or build your own book, then work through its pages. The Refine panel holds the page layout, photo, text and page-order controls.
See how pages become a book
A page is one finished side of your zine. A sheet is the piece of paper that goes into your printer. In a folded booklet, one sheet holds four pages: two on its front and two on its back.
An eight-page zine uses two sheets. The cover and back cover count as pages.
The book on screen stays in reading order. The print PDF can look out of order because it places the cover beside the back cover and pairs the inside pages for folding. Keep that arrangement when you print.
Full page Letter · no fold and Full page A4 · no fold work differently. Each finished page fills a sheet side, and the export stays in reading order. You can stack, clip or bind those pages.
Add your photos
- Choose ADD NEW PHOTOS to bring pictures into the photo tray.
- If your photos are already in LIBRARY, choose them from the shared tray.
- In the tray, drag a photo toward the gap where you want it. A thin line shows where it will land.
The tray holds the photos you are working with. The book holds the photos you have placed on its pages. You can use a photo more than once.
If you have selected several photos, they move together. Moving photos in the tray changes the tray order only. Pages you have already made keep their order.
Option + arrow keys also move selected photos. On a touch screen, press and hold before dragging. UNDO restores the previous order.
Know what you are changing
- Choose the page you want to work on.
- Choose a tab in the Refine panel.
LAYOUT changes how the page is arranged. PHOTO holds photo adjustments. TEXT is where you add and style words. ARRANGE changes where the page sits in the book.
The font controls offer WHOLE ZINE and THIS PAGE. Check that choice before changing the font. It decides whether the change applies across the book or to the selected page.
Undo a change
Use UNDO, or Command + Z, to step back. Shift + Command + Z redoes an undone change.
Undo covers moving a photo in the tray, changing page order, adding pages and changing the format. Words typed together are undone as a group, so you do not step back one letter at a time.
For a version you want to keep, use SAVE ZINE. Download a .zine file when you want a separate editable copy on your computer.
Look through the finished book
- Use the arrows beside the book to move between pages.
- Choose View larger to open the book for a closer look. Use its arrows to turn the pages.
- Check the cover, the middle pages and the back cover.
Look for photos that need a different crop, a page that feels crowded and a caption left over from a starter.
A couple of tips
Save a version before a large change. For a printed zine, one folded test copy shows you the real size, the paper and the way the pages sit together.
A zine from a starter
A starter gives you a page sequence, photo spaces and words to work from. Replace the pictures, change the writing and adjust the layouts as you go.
Begin with a starter
- Choose your PAPER SIZE on the opening screen.
- Choose Portrait or Landscape under FORMAT.
- Add a ZINE TITLE (OPTIONAL) if you have one.
- Choose one of the named starters.
- Look through the book to see where the photos, words and open space sit.
- Choose ADD NEW PHOTOS to bring in your pictures.
The starters are ’one windowsill, seven mornings’, ’hands’, ’the walk i always take’, ’what’s on the table’, ’small and overlooked’ and ’a single colour’. You can give the finished zine a different title.
START WITH A SAMPLE is a separate choice. It opens a sample book with photo placeholders and writing so you can try the controls. Replace them before using it as your own zine.
Make the starter your own
- Choose a page in the book.
- Place one of your photos in its photo space.
- Select the words you want to change and write your own.
- Use the Refine tabs to change that page’s layout, photo placement or type.
- Move through the whole book, including the cover and back cover.
- Choose SAVE ZINE when you have a version you want to keep.
A starter’s writing is part of the page. Check every page for sample words, including a short line on the back cover.
The export panel warns you when sample photo placeholders remain, and they appear in the export. Replace them, remove the photo space or choose a different layout before you export.
Try another starter
After you begin with a named starter, choose Another starter to return to the opening choices. Save the zine you want to keep first.
A couple of tips
Replace the cover early so the book begins to feel like yours.
A zine from scratch
Build from scratch when you want to choose the sequence yourself. You can begin with photos or start with the pages and add pictures as you work.
Start a blank zine
- Choose a PAPER SIZE.
- Choose Portrait or Landscape under FORMAT.
- Enter a title if you want one.
- Choose BUILD FROM SCRATCH.
- Choose ADD NEW PHOTOS to bring in a small set of pictures.
- Select a page and choose LAYOUT in the Refine panel.
Your paper choice gives the book its proportions. A folded Letter zine, a pocket zine and a full page document have different page shapes. You can change the paper later and check the pages again.
Begin with your photos
- Drop photos onto the opening screen, or choose CHOOSE PHOTOS.
- ZINE flows them into pages to give you a starting sequence.
- Move pages, change layouts or leave a page for words as the sequence takes shape.
Reorder the tray to bring related photos together. The tray order is separate from the page order under ARRANGE.
Choose a layout
- Select the page you want to change.
- Choose LAYOUT in the Refine panel.
- Choose from the layouts under LAYOUT FOR THIS PAGE.
- Add your photos to the available spaces.
- Adjust WHITE SPACE and check how the page sits beside its neighbour.
Try the layout with your actual photo before deciding. A tall photograph, a wide photograph and a page of writing each need a different amount of room.
Plan the pages
- Begin with the cover and a few inside pages. A cover can hold a photograph, a title or both.
- Use each inside page for one image, several images or words.
- Check the back cover. It can hold a photo, a few words or simply space.
- Choose View larger to see the sequence as a whole.
A couple of tips
Make one complete small version before adding more pages.
More pages, in a different order
Use the page count to change the length of the book, and ARRANGE to change its sequence.
Add pages
- Find the page count below the book.
- Choose + to add pages.
- Move to the new pages and choose their layouts.
- Add photos or words.
Folded books use groups of four pages because each sheet has four page sides. The cover and back cover count in that total.
The − control reduces the page count. Save first if the pages you are removing contain work. UNDO takes you back through the change.
Move a page
- Select the page you want to move.
- Choose ARRANGE in the Refine panel.
- Under Move this page, use the controls to change its position.
- Use move to page when you know the position you want, or MOVE TO FRONT to bring it forward.
- Check the pages on either side of its new position.
The page’s photos and words move with it. ORDER IN THE BOOK shows the sequence while you work. Use its page thumbnails to find a page.
Remove a page
- Select the page.
- Open ARRANGE.
- Choose DELETE PAGE.
If you removed the wrong page, use UNDO. A saved copy gives you a version to return to after you have finished the session.
Run one photo across the middle
- Go to the middle of the book and open LAYOUT.
- Choose a layout under CENTER SPREAD · ONE PHOTO ACROSS BOTH PAGES.
- Check the crop across both pages.
A face, a line of words or a small detail can be hard to see in the fold. Leave a little room around the centre line.
REMOVE THE SPREAD brings back the two pages underneath. They are kept while the spread is in place.
A couple of tips
Save a copy before making a much shorter or longer edition.
A portrait or landscape zine
Portrait makes a side-bound book. Landscape makes a top-bound book, with pages that turn upward.
Choose portrait or landscape
- On the opening screen, find FORMAT.
- Choose Portrait for a side-bound book or Landscape for a top-bound book.
- Start your zine and check the page shape with your photos in place.
A landscape photograph can work in either format. In a portrait book it may sit with space around it or use a crop. In a landscape book it may fill more of the page.
Change it after you start
- Open EXPORT.
- Find ORIENTATION and choose Portrait or Landscape.
- Review the book in its new format.
- Check photo crops, headings, body text, captions and the centre spread.
- Save the version you want to keep.
Changing the orientation changes the shape of every page. A page that worked in portrait can need less writing or a different layout in landscape.
UNDO restores the previous orientation. To keep both versions, choose SAVE A COPY before making the second one.
Print a landscape zine
- Choose your paper and orientation.
- Open Printing instructions and follow them for that combination.
The binding moves to the top, so the direction the printed pages turn changes. For full pages, portrait uses long-edge duplex printing and landscape uses short-edge duplex printing. Folded books and scored cards use their own arrangement.
A one-sheet test lets you check the front, back and fold before printing the whole zine.
A couple of tips
Choose the orientation early when one photograph is central to the book.
Photos on the page
The photo tray holds your pictures. The page layout decides where they go.
Add or replace a photo
- Choose ADD NEW PHOTOS in the tray.
- Select the page you want to work on.
- Drag a photo from the tray into the photo space you want to fill.
- Select the placed photo and choose PHOTO in the Refine panel to adjust it.
On a page with several photo spaces, aim for the one you want to change.
To swap a picture, select the photo and choose REPLACE PHOTO. The page stays in the book.
Change the crop
- Select the photo on the page.
- Adjust it within its space.
- Check the edge of the crop as well as the subject.
The layout sets the shape of the photo space. If the crop asks too much of the photograph, choose SWITCH LAYOUT, or return to LAYOUT and try a different arrangement.
Check the neighbouring page after changing a crop.
Rotate a photo
- Select the photo on the page.
- Use the curved-arrow control on the photo to turn it a quarter turn.
- Check the crop.
- Click away from the photo to review the page.
If the new crop leaves too much out, try another layout.
Leave space around a photo
- Open LAYOUT.
- Choose a WHITE SPACE setting: none, +, ++ or +++.
- To change one page only, turn on Set just this page first.
With Set just this page off, the setting changes the shared white space across the zine. More space makes the image smaller within the page.
Remove a photo
- Select the photo.
- Choose REMOVE PHOTO in the photo controls.
On a page with several cells, check which photo is selected first.
CLEAR ALL CELLS returns every placed photo to the tray. Your photos are kept. Save first if you want to keep the current arrangement as another version.
A couple of tips
Keep important details away from a fold or a tight crop.
Words, captions and dates
WRITE has + Heading, + Body text, + Caption and + Date. Write on the page you want to change, then use the text controls to adjust how it sits with the pictures.
Add a heading or body text
- Select the page.
- Choose TEXT in the Refine panel.
- Open WRITE, then choose + Heading or + Body text.
- Select the words on the page and type your own.
- Click away to see the finished arrangement.
When no text box is active, T adds a heading, B adds body text, C adds a caption and D adds a date. Press Escape to finish typing and keep the text selected.
A heading and body text are separate pieces of writing. Use either one or both. An empty text area can stay empty. Sample writing in a starter is real text, so replace or remove it.
Change the type
- Select the heading or body text on the page.
- Use A− or A+ in the toolbar above the book to change its size. The number beside them shows the point size.
- Use the font-name control to try another font. It shows Studio at first, then the name of the font you choose.
- Check WHOLE ZINE or THIS PAGE before changing the font.
- Click away from the words to review the page.
The TEXT panel also has regular or italic type and left, centre or right alignment.
Move the words
- Select the text on the page.
- Use the text controls to place the heading and body text together or separately.
Command + G locks or unlocks the heading and body text together. Lock them when you want them to keep their relationship.
After moving text, check its distance from the page edge, from nearby photos and from the fold.
Add a caption and date
- Select the page and open TEXT.
- Open CAPTION + DATE.
- Enter your CAPTION, then choose a CAPTION SIZE.
- Turn on DATE if you want it on the page.
- Choose the date format and use the date field to set the date.
Review dates from a starter as you review its other words.
Fit long words
- Look at the text on the page and check for an overflow message.
- Shorten the writing, choose another layout or adjust the type size.
- For a longer piece, choose Continue on a new page under TEXT.
- Read both pages to check where the writing continues.
The export panel warns when words run past the edge. Resolve that warning before you export. Text that fits in one orientation or paper size may need adjusting in another.
A couple of tips
Print a test at actual size when the zine has more than a few lines of writing. Check small type on the real paper size, especially in a pocket zine.
The right paper size
Choose the paper that will go into your printer. ZINE uses that choice to size and arrange the pages. The paper menu includes folded books, scored cards and full pages.
Choose a paper size
Letter uses an 8½ × 11 inch sheet. Folded in half, it makes a 5½ × 8½ inch portrait zine.
A4 uses a 210 × 297 mm sheet. Folded in half, it makes an A5-size portrait zine, 148.5 × 210 mm.
Pocket Zine uses a 7 × 5 inch sheet. Folded in half, it makes a small 3½ × 5 inch portrait book. Use matching paper or a matching custom paper size in your printer settings.
Card 5×7 uses a flat 7 × 10 inch scored card. Card 4½×6¼ uses a flat 6¼ × 9 inch scored card. Each folds at its score to make the size in its name.
Full page Letter · no fold and Full page A4 · no fold keep the full sheet as a finished page. Choose one for pages you want to stack, clip or bind without folding.
Change the paper size
- Open EXPORT.
- Choose the new PAPER SIZE.
- Review the pages.
- Check photo crops, text size, line breaks and space around each element.
- Save the new version if you want to keep it.
Changing the paper size changes the shape or scale of the pages. Check the cover and centre spread as well as the inside pages.
To keep two editions, choose SAVE A COPY before changing the size and give each copy a name you can tell apart.
Choose paper for the printer
- Use paper your printer can feed and print on.
- For a two-sided zine, check that both sides are printable. Some photo papers and glossy cards print on one side only.
- Set your printer’s paper type to match your paper. Follow the paper maker’s instructions where supplied.
- Print a plain-paper test to check page order and orientation.
- Print one copy on your chosen paper and look at the colour, the fold and the way the sheets sit together.
Thick paper or scored cards may need a rear or manual feed.
Add a size your printer does not list
- Look for a custom paper-size option in the printer’s print settings.
- Enter the flat sheet size, before folding. For a scored 5 × 7 inch card, the flat sheet is 7 × 10 inches.
Printer support varies by model and paper feed. If your printer cannot feed the size, choose a ZINE paper size that matches paper it can handle.
A couple of tips
Keep the paper choice in ZINE and the paper size in the printer settings matched. Print a test whenever you change stock, size or orientation.
A zine to print at home
ZINE makes the page arrangement for your folded book. Export the file, then print it at 100% or Actual size. Leave your printer’s own booklet arrangement off.
Export a booklet PDF
- Choose EXPORT.
- Choose Print.
- Under PRINTING, choose Booklet.
- Check PAPER SIZE and ORIENTATION.
- Open Page options if you want page numbers or fold guide lines.
- Enter an EXPORT NAME if you want a particular filename.
- Check any warnings about sample photo placeholders or words running past the edge.
- Choose EXPORT PDF and wait for the file to finish.
The PDF is already arranged onto sheet sides for folding. A page beside the cover in the PDF may be the back cover. That becomes reading order when the printed sheets are nested and folded.
The print export is prepared at 300 ppi. The export summary shows the page count, paper choice and printed sides. Read it after adding pages or changing the paper size.
Print double-sided
- Open the PDF on your computer and choose Print.
- Match the printer’s paper size to the size selected in ZINE.
- Set scaling to 100% or Actual size.
- Leave the printer’s Booklet setting off, because ZINE has already arranged the pages.
- Turn on double-sided printing and use the flip edge shown in ZINE’s Printing instructions for your format.
- Print a test sheet, fold it and check that both sides are the right way up.
- Print the full set once the test is correct.
For a folded portrait zine, use short-edge flipping. For a folded landscape zine, use long-edge flipping. The same applies to the scored-card formats.
Printer dialogs name these settings differently. Check the paper itself: when you turn the folded page in the direction of your book, the back should be upright.
Keep the exported page order. Do not rearrange the PDF into reading order before printing a folded booklet.
Print one side at a time
- Open EXPORT and choose Print.
- Under PRINTING, choose One side at a time.
- Choose PDF or JPEGs · ZIP under FILE TYPE.
- Check the paper, orientation and export name, then export.
- Print the first sheet side at actual size.
- Put that same sheet back into the printer with its blank side ready to print.
- Print the next exported side onto its back.
- Repeat with each pair of sides, keeping the finished sheets in order.
The JPEG filenames walk you through the pairs. A file marked print-first is followed by its flip-and-print partner. Keep each pair on the same sheet.
How you reload paper depends on your printer and feed. On a plain test sheet, draw a small pencil mark on one face and an arrow toward the leading edge. Print the first side, note where the marks sit, then reload it for the back. Once both sides are upright, keep that test sheet as your guide.
Fold and finish
- Put the printed sheets in order.
- Nest them together and check the cover and back cover.
- Fold the stack in half along the centre.
- Turn through every page to check the sequence.
- Staple along the fold if you want to bind the book that way.
A few sheets fold more easily than a thick stack. With scored cards, fold each card on its score before nesting. For a landscape zine, the fold is at the top, so check the way the pages turn before stapling.
Print pocket zines and scored cards
- For the Pocket · 7 × 5 in export, match the 7 × 5 inch size in the printer settings and keep the scale at actual size.
- For scored cards, use the flat size: 7 × 10 inches for Card 5×7, or 6¼ × 9 inches for Card 4½×6¼.
- Choose a card or thick-paper setting where your printer has one.
- If your printer can turn the card over, use Booklet with the edge shown in Printing instructions. If it cannot, use One side at a time.
- Check that the card stock prints on both sides.
Make a test before using your chosen paper.
Fix an upside-down back or a small print
An upside-down back usually means the duplex flip edge needs changing. Try the other edge on one test sheet. For manual printing, change the way you reload that sheet and record the direction that works.
A smaller print can come from Fit to page, a mismatched paper size or printer margins. Check the selected paper size and scale first. Print at 100% or actual size.
If a printer’s booklet setting has arranged the PDF again, turn that setting off and print the original export as a normal document.
A couple of tips
Keep one successful test sheet beside the printer when feeding manually.
Full pages and JPEGs
Full pages make a document without a fold. JPEG exports give you individual images to print or use elsewhere.
Make a full page document
- Choose Full page Letter · no fold or Full page A4 · no fold as the PAPER SIZE.
- Choose Portrait or Landscape.
- Check the photos and words at that size.
- Open EXPORT and choose Print.
- Choose PDF under FILE TYPE.
- Check the summary and choose EXPORT PDF.
Each exported page is one finished page, in reading order. Print at actual size, then stack, clip, staple or bind the pages.
For a two-sided document, use long-edge flipping in portrait and short-edge flipping in landscape. To print only the fronts, leave double-sided printing off.
Export full page JPEGs
- Select a Full page paper size.
- Open EXPORT, then Print.
- Under FILE TYPE, choose JPEGs · ZIP.
- Check the summary and choose EXPORT ZIP.
- Open the downloaded ZIP to find the page images.
These are print-size JPEGs. Keep the numbered order when you make a document from them.
JPEGs are flattened images. Keep a saved zine or a .zine file to change the words, photos or layout later.
Share the pages on a website
- Open EXPORT and choose Digital.
- Under INCLUDE, choose Pages for web.
- Check the export name and choose EXPORT ZIP.
- Open the ZIP and use the numbered images in page order.
Pages for web includes your text and makes images 1500 pixels wide, sized for screens. Use a print export for the print-size version.
Send photos to Canva
- Open EXPORT and choose Digital.
- Under INCLUDE, choose Photos for Canva.
- Check the summary and choose EXPORT ZIP.
- Open the ZIP, then add the images to your Canva design.
This export has photos only, without ZINE’s words. It makes one print-size image per page, in order. Add your own type in Canva.
For page images with ZINE’s words included, choose Pages for web.
A couple of tips
Keep the numbered filenames so the pages stay in order. Save the editable zine alongside exports you may want to revise.
A flip video
A flip video shows your zine turning page by page. ZINE exports a silent MP4, with choices for size, pace, background and ending.
Export a flip video
- Check that the photos and words are ready.
- Open EXPORT, then choose Digital.
- Under INCLUDE, choose Flip video.
- Choose HD · 1920 × 1080 or 4K · 3840 × 2160 under VIDEO SIZE.
- Choose SECONDS PER SPREAD.
- Choose a BACKGROUND and ENDING.
- Check the summary, enter an EXPORT NAME if needed and choose EXPORT MP4.
- Wait for the export to finish, then open the downloaded video and watch it through.
The summary gives the number of pages, page turns, duration and video size. Check it after changing the pace or ending.
Choose the size and pace
HD · 1920 × 1080 makes a smaller file than 4K · 3840 × 2160. A larger size takes longer to export.
SECONDS PER SPREAD sets how long each spread stays in view. The choices run from half a second to four seconds. Pages with words need more time than photo pages.
The total duration also includes the page turns and ending. The export summary shows it.
Choose the background
- Under BACKGROUND, choose Studio grid, Paper, White or Colour.
- For Colour, enter a HEX COLOUR: six characters, beginning with #.
The colour swatch shows what you have entered.
Choose the ending
- Under ENDING, choose Close the book to finish with the book closed, or Stay on the back cover to leave the last page in view.
- With Close the book, you can add a CLOSING NOTE of up to 60 characters. It sits beside the closed book in the zine’s type.
Leave the note empty if you want the book to stand on its own. Check the note each time you export a different zine.
Add music
The MP4 is silent. Add music in the app where you edit or share the video, or bring the file into your video editor. Watch the whole video first to check the beginning, the page turns and the ending.
If the video won’t export
- Read the message ZINE shows in the export panel.
- Save your zine, so you can reopen the editable project.
- Choose EXPORT MP4 again and wait for the export to finish.
An export that shows an error does not give you a finished video. Play the downloaded file through before you share it. If it keeps failing, go to the help section at the end of this guide.
A couple of tips
Give written pages enough time to be read.
Save it and come back
Saving keeps an editable zine. Exporting makes a PDF, images or a video to use elsewhere.
Save your zine
- Open SAVE.
- Use Name it (optional) to name the zine.
- Choose SAVE ZINE in the save panel.
- Check that the save has finished.
Saved zines appear under On this device in the save panel. A name that shows the subject, paper size or edition helps when you make several versions.
Keep another version
- Open SAVE and choose SAVE A COPY.
- Give it a name that sets it apart from the first.
- Continue working on the copy.
Make a copy before changing the paper size, trying a different orientation or making a shorter edition.
Open a saved zine
- Open SAVE and choose the zine from On this device. On the opening screen, Open a Saved Zine opens the same list.
- To open a downloaded file, choose OPEN ZINE and select the .zine file. On the opening screen, Open a Saved Zine also reveals Open a .zine file.
- Check the cover and page count when it opens.
Save any zine you are working on before opening another one.
Download an editable file
- Open the save controls.
- Choose DOWNLOAD .ZINE FILE.
- Keep the file in a folder where you will find it again.
The .zine file is the editable project. A PDF, JPEG or MP4 is a finished export, so keep the project file as well. To work on another computer, open the .zine file there, check the pages and save the version you want to continue with.
Replace a saved version
When you open a file, ZINE may offer Replace the saved version with this file. Choose it when the file is the version you want to keep on this device.
Check the name and version first. If you are comparing two editions, keep a separate .zine file for each.
Start again
- Choose Start over.
- Choose KEEP WORKING to stay with the current zine, or YES, BEGIN AGAIN to start fresh.
Save the current zine first if you want to keep it. Files you have already downloaded stay as they are.
A couple of tips
Use names you can tell apart in the saved-zine list.
If something isn’t working
Check the selected page and photo first. Choose the relevant tab in the Refine panel and check whether the change applies to this page or more widely. If you moved or removed something by mistake, try UNDO.
For an export problem, read the message in the export panel. Replace sample photo placeholders and resolve words that run past the page edge. Check the paper size, orientation and file type before exporting again.
For a printing problem, return to one plain test sheet. Check the paper size, actual-size scaling and the way the sheet turns. Keep the printer’s own booklet arrangement off when using ZINE’s folded booklet PDF.
If the problem continues, note what you tried, what you expected and what happened. Include whether you saw it on the page, in the preview or in the downloaded file. Keep your editable zine saved while you work through the issue.
In the Studio app, choose Help → Email Kim and include your note.
Back to the list
